Danis Brown - Calligraohy

Denis Brown is an Irish calligrapher, who first became interested in calligraphy when he started studying it in his early teens as a schoolboy, falling in love with it from the beginning because of the ability to make interesting letters with just a few direct pen-strokes. Brown received his first commissions to produce calligraphy aged just 15, and went on to study a calligraphy degree at the Roehampton Institute in London, and was awarded a fellowship of the UK Society of Scribes and Illuminators at the same time. He was their youngest ever recipient, as well as their first Irish recipient.

Denis Brown describes his style of work as “pushing boundaries whilst continually refining and extending traditional calligraphic skills” and he uses letterforms and writing to create interesting 2D and 3D layered artwork, some of which features a use of mixed media. Brown is known in parts of the world as a leader in the field of calligraphy, and he spends time every year travelling around the world to teach workshops internationally at calligraphy guilds, and teaches through the internet with a Facebook page, an online video program (Calligraphy.TV) and a YouTube account, The real quick skill.

Plus I found his website http://www.quillskill.com/ where he showcases some of his work and explains them.

I like his more expressive stuff, the use of colour line and tone so I shall try and watch some of his stuff and take they way he works and put it into my own work.

Tom Gauld

has the art of simplicity perfectly, I love his childlike little drawings , there fun and they make me smile :)

Mark Ryden

I like his illustrations because there quite ethreal and surreal, and i'm abit wierd so I like that ind of thing. His work is very detailed and he uses 'muted' colours. As much as I like the strangeness i think they are a little to deatailed (some of them) and are just 'nice' images, which is strange because his work stood out on the presentation. I'm not really sure about tyhem but they do make me curious... abit like Alice....
Actually they remind me of alice in wonderland.

Dan McCarthy

I think it's a very cool idea to have the skelington with the 'sheet' over him to show a ghost. It wouldn't have been on my list of idea's and I love how its so diferen't. I love his simplicity and minimal choice for colour. I still get a little confused when it comes to colour. But he has a good tonal range whithin the colours and I think that it gives his illustrations (especialy the one colour ones) depth and intrest and makes them aestetically pleasing. It shows that you don't have to use alot of colours to make an interesting image/illustration.

Angela barrett

I love how soft her drawings look and how detailed they are. It looks like she chooses her colour palette carefully and really conideres everything.  Every drawing of heers is beautifully done. There are no sharp or harsh lines and no outline, It really gives the apperence of fantacy.

Vera Brosgol

I like Vera's work because its simple and fun. I like the thick lines against the softer watercolours and that the watercolours are not put on in one flat colour. It gives the drawing more depth and texture. I also like that her lines arn't perfectly straight, she hasn't bothered to use a ruler and everything is slightly curved. I think this is better because it makes it imperfect and easier on the eye.Imperfections are much more interesting anyway.
THe bottem picture form 'Anya's Ghost' is an almost perfect colour sceme for my ghost Narratives project, ecept I'm not allowed to use black...
